Server runs docker with sabnzbs etc plus samba. Other side is a franken-build laptop ubuntu server (old laptop + a couple TBs of HDDs on external hdd docks).

Because I have my media shared with Samba and in case if client can play the video without transcoding then server can just provide a link to shared file Think Plex should have something similar to this. For better read/write sync with your media player Emby server have some settings for streaming rates where you can setup your local network speed and internet connection speed (in case if you would like to stream video outside of your home network) so server won't try to sent more media data than you network can transfer.
In my own setup I have NAS and Emby server on different machines (and even more - my Emby is a virtual machine and NAS is a real machine) but it is possible to keep NAS and server on same machine. and then 1gb/s is better than 100 mb/s.Īs for server - client setup I found what it is better to use Plex/Emby as server and Kodi with special plugin as client when your files are shared on NAS. First question - is your laptop on wi-fi? for media it is much better to use cable.
